Washington DC – August 3, 2019 – Report By: Dr. June Knight
On June 20, 2019, the Department of State hosted an event to celebrate people who fight against sex trafficking.
(Press Release) – Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo will unveil the 2019 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at the U.S. Department of State. Secretary Pompeo will be joined by Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump.
As required by the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, the TIP Report assesses government efforts around the world to combat human trafficking and highlights strategies to address this crime and protect the victims. This year’s report, the 19th installment, includes narratives for 187 countries and territories, including the United States.
During the ceremony, Secretary Pompeo and Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump, who has taken a leadership role in highlighting human trafficking as a priority for this Administration, will honor the 2019 TIP Report Heroes, men and women from around the globe whose tireless efforts have made a lasting impact on the fight against modern slavery. Following the ceremony, many of the Heroes will travel to cities across the United States to engage with the American people through an International Visitor Leadership Program.
SECRETARY POMPEO: Good morning, everyone. Welcome.
First, I want to welcome all of the human trafficking survivors in attendance here today. You are all heroes. This is a very special morning. You are all standing up to ensure that no one else suffers the abuse that you endured. And we are proud of your commitment and inspired every minute by your courage.
Let me also thank Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump for joining us here today and for continuing to speak out with absolute moral clarity on the issue of human trafficking. She calls it what it is: modern-day slavery.
I’m also honored to welcome members of Congress from both parties. If there was ever an issue that was bipartisan and transacts the politics of the moment, human trafficking is most certainly it.
That’s also clear from the attendance today of all the living former heads of the State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Office from the past two administrations. Thank you all for being here, and welcome.
And finally, we’re glad to see ambassadors and representatives from around the world who have joined us today. Human trafficking is indeed a global crisis, and it requires a global response. So thank you all for being here and coming to join us this morning.
In just a moment, we’ll salute those who are leading the fight against human trafficking: Our 2019 TIP Report Heroes.
